This week felt much more productive than the last. I am excited that things are started to happen and that I am being assigned new goals and jobs in the coming weeks.
We met on Monday for one hour to discuss our plans for next week.
Overall, these were some of the goals we communicated during this meeting
1) Firstly, we assigned that the next paper we will review will cover Queen Victoria. Once again, Dr. Farless emphasized that we will mostly be critiquing citations. This is especially important for publications, where incorrect citations not only harm the article but the integrity of the publisher.
2) Next, we established that we want to meet with writers in the coming week. We decided that it would be up to the author if they wanted to have a one on one meeting with us, editors, or if they would prefer a group meeting. We decided this because we were worried that if we automatically did group edits, the author would feel “ganged up on.” This way, the writer has an active choice in how they meet for their paper.
3) Finally, we went over our own publications. As I mentioned last post, I have some newly found spare time that will now (hopefully) allow me to pursue this.
Accomplishing most of these goals will take, time, but I was excited to get started this week. First, I updated my comment on the Pandemic paper and sent those over to Dr. Farless after the meeting. This is so she can review one last time that our corrections are correct. Unfortunately, this past week was very busy because of mid-terms and agreements with my club, but I am ready and excited to start my edits of the Queen Victoria paper this weekend.
I am also excited to focus on citations. Midterms this and last week had me focus on my citations and I feel even more familiar with the Chicago style. Furthermore, I have recently figured out how to use the University of Central Florida Library’s Primio search function to help trace the articles. I know this will be supremely helpful in tracing secondary source citations.
One new thing I learned this week was sacrifice. I am an active member and office within the University of Central Florida’s book club. One Monday a month we meet for club social events and to update each other on the book we are currently read. This week, there was a conflict with my book club and my internship meeting. Therefore, it was necessary to sacrifice my book club meeting in order to stay on track with my internship. It was unfortunate, but I knew it was necessary, and it was an important lesson in prioritization. I also already have communicated this conflict and have sorted everything out with my supervisor so that I will not have to miss either meeting again.
This week left me feeling much for excited and confident about my internship. I am beyond ready to begin editing a new paper this week and look forward to in-person editing sessions in the coming weeks!
